Suppose you are not familiar with the Lagrangian method, you may use the
substitute method for this question - it should be an exercise in junior-high.

Here is the hint as follow:

Max U = XY (1)
st. 400 = 10X + 4Y (2)

400 - 4Y
Per (2), we have X = -----------
10

400 - 4Y
Therefore, in (1), we have U = ( ---------) * Y
10

This is a quadratic form.

Try to solve the rest and find the answer by yourself.

如果是不知道為什麼是 Max U and st. Budget, 請參考 Hal. R Varian 第二章的
第一段 (我手上沒有英文課本, 不過, 如果我沒有背錯的話, 我可以很誇張的說: 應該
就是第二章的第一句話. ) 多念幾次, 如果真的還是不懂, 那就更大聲的再念幾次.

如果是不知道我說答案為什麼會一樣, 在預算限制式的狀況時, 把兩條預算限制式拿出來
比一比 - 順便說一下, 2000 = 50X + 20Y 的結果也是一樣 (為什麼? )

而在 U = (XY) ^ (1/2) 和 U = XY 的部分, 請去想一想什麼叫做無異曲線? 或者, 什麼
叫做 (positive) monotonic transformation.
