Hong Kong sees first complaint of iPhone 8 swollen battery

Only a week after Apple’s iPhone 8 was launched on Sept. 22, Hong Kong has
seen its first case of a “bloated” battery after similar reports in Taiwan
and Japan.

A male customer, surnamed Lam, bought an iPhone 8 on the day it was released
and said the phone’s battery expanded six days later, swelling to an extent
that the screen and the body of the phone split apart, Apple Daily reports.

Lam brought the phone to the Apple Store in Sha Tin and received a
replacement after the shop determined that the device could not be repaired.

Apple Hong Kong confirmed there has been such a case and said it is
investigating.

The company said it was an isolated incident and does not pose a safety
threat.

However, this is not the first time the iPhone 8 has had problems with its
batteries.

Earlier, a Taiwanese woman claimed her 64GB iPhone 8 Plus had split open
while it was being charged.

The front panel bulged and eventually lifted completely from the device,
according to reports.

Another fault was also reported when a Japanese user posted photographs of
his iPhone 8 Plus on Twitter on Sept. 24. They showed the phone with its
screen curved, detached from the aluminum casing with its insides exposed.

The user said he put the phone in a pot for safety reasons, fearing an
explosion.

Experts said the screen could have detached not because of a swollen battery
but due to defective screws and glue used to attach the screen to the body.

Korean media Hankyung reported that the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus batteries
are manufactured by Samsung DSI and LG Chem. The former is the same company
that produced the batteries for the problematic Samsung Galaxy Note 7.

Apple Hong Kong refused to comment on whether the manufacturer of the iPhone
