Special Information on Expiring Option Positions
Based on current market conditions, please be advised, option positions
expiring today in select names* will have additional restrictions on
potential exercise instructions. Existing long put positions without a
respective underlying equity holding must be closed today, prior to 1 PM ET
or we may have to liquidate your position to prevent any short sales. Call
positions expiring today will require additional collateral prior to any
exercise instructions being processed.
Why are we implementing these additional restrictions?
We continue to review and adjust our requirements to mitigate risk due to the
unprecedented volatility. These actions are specific only to near-term
expiring options and do not limit your ability to trade options expiring
beyond January 29, 2021.
Why are some options unable to be exercised?
We are currently not allowing any short positions to be established in these
securities, therefore long puts will need to be closed to prevent any short
sales. However, please note married puts or puts covered by a long position
will be handled as normal and may be exercised.
Long calls will require sufficient collateral that can cover the value of the
potential exercise up to 100% of the notional value. Please note; you must be
able to meet a 100% margin requirement or have available cash to pay for the
exercise in full.
Some trades for options expiring today will still be allowed
Covered calls and cash secured short puts will still be permitted.
Additionally, all closing transactions will continue to be processed as
normal.
What will happen if you do not take action?
TD Ameritrade, volume permitting, will liquidate any in the money options as
described above. Please note however if no action is taken, we may be forced
to submit; Do Not Exercise instructions, closing out any potential exposure
which will also result in no remaining value in those options.
